Frequently Asked Questions

What is a modular rowing shell?

A modular rowing shell is similar to a sectional shell, but designed to accommodate a flexible number of seats. This affects quite a few of the design elements including beam, hull profile, choice of skeg, and more. These changes slightly impact the overall performance of a shell at a given weight class, but provide tremendous flexibility and repairability.

How big are the sections? How can I store/transport my boat?

Our single is compromised of three pieces: bow, rower(stateroom), and stern. The bow is 11', rower 6' and stern 9'. These can easily be carried on top of most cars in the same way you would carry a kayak. Many of our rowers don't reside in a property with a garage and choose a corner of their living space to show off their rowing shell. As each piece on it's own is quite light, moving it to the car and eventually to the water is a simple task.

How long does it take to assemble a boat? What tools do I need?

Our boats take on average 10 minutes to go from strapped to the top of a car to ready to in slings and ready to carry to the water. There are 14 bolts total to assemble a single, 8 bolts to attach the bulkheads between sections and 6 bolts to attach the riggers. Each boat comes with a ratcheting wrench and standard wrench, which is all of the tools needed to put a boat together and get it on the water.

What are the boats made out of?

We manufacture our Strider hulls out of hand picked kiln dried poplar, which is then book-matched to provide a unique and pleasing pattern in each boat. The bulkheads are made out of high count/grade plywood for exceptional dimensional stability. They are inset with Ash to support the gunnel and the tremendous force applied through the riggers. A hard wood such as Ash or Maple is used for the gunnels. Riggers are produced from 6061 T6 Aluminum for a high strength to weight ratio. Hi-gloss spar urethane is used to protect the hull from exposure from the water, it is what gives our boats a unique golden sheen. Lastly, the deck is made from aircraft type light weight polyester based fabric.

Where / how are the boats produced?

Our boats are produced in our shop located in Burlington Vermont. We produce the majority of the hull/rigging ourselves and rely on industry standard components (C2, H2Row, Durham) for the rest. All of the critical dimensions are precision cut on our CNC machinery to ensure compatibility between the parts of the boat being produced, as well as any replacement sections needed down the road.

How do I purchase replacement parts?

We offer replacement parts/sections for all rowing shells both currently in production and previous models. For components we do not manufacture ourselves, we will direct you to our industry partners. You can get in touch with us by email or phone listed at the top of this page.

If the boat is damaged, how hard is it to repair myself?

As the boat is made of wood instead of fiberglass or carbon fiber honey comb, it is easy to repair using standard woodworking techniques. For example: A crack in the hull from being harshly dropped can be gently spread open, filled with Tightbond III wood glue, taped closed and then re-urethaned once the glue has dried. Please don't hesitate to contact us for help / advice / materials for any type of repair on the shells.

What warranty / guarantees do you offer?

All of our boats come with a three year warranty for manufacturing defects.
